Miguel Facchini Open-source systems

The license, in practical terms

The systems here are open source under the Apache License 2.0, the same as Kubernetes and Android. It is a permissive license that allows almost everything, with few obligations. This is a summary; the license text is what counts.

What you can do

  • Use it for free, including to make money: a clinic using it every day, or a company installing it and charging for installation or support
  • Change the code as you like
  • Redistribute the original or your modified version, for free or for sale
  • Keep your changes closed: publishing what you changed is not required
  • Use any patents in the code, without risk of being sued for it

What you must do

  • When redistributing, include a copy of the license, the copyright notices and the NOTICE file
  • Mark the files you changed as modified

What you cannot do

  • Use the system's name and logo (Kaladrius, for example) as if your version were the official one: the license covers the code, not the brand
  • Hold the author to a warranty: the software comes as is, and the author is not liable for problems in your use
  • Sue someone claiming the code infringes a patent and keep using it: whoever does so loses the patent license

What stays with the author

The code belongs to the author, and the license applies to everyone else. The author can offer installation, hosting, support and customization, and can change the license of future versions. Versions already published stay Apache 2.0 forever.

The brand also stays with the author. Whoever makes their own version must give it another name and logo.

If you contribute code

What you send joins the project under the same Apache License 2.0, and your copyright over that part stays yours. See each system's contribution guidelines on GitHub.

This summary helps you understand, but it is not legal advice. For a specific case, such as reselling a system, consult a lawyer.

Support

The systems are free. If they help you, consider supporting their development.
